Steel Pan Building and Tuning with Khuent Rose
March 01, 2020 – April 26, 2020
12:00pm – 1:00pm
Through our Bringing J’Ouvert to the Forefront initiative, we recognize the cost of hiring a steel pan tuner. In order to confront the lack of resources available for J’Ouvert artists, we are dedicated to increasing the number of steel pan tuners that are locally available. Brooklyn Arts Council, in partnership with J’Ouvert City International, and Achievement First Brooklyn High School, will offer a free class for those interested in learning how to tune steel pan drums.
Artist, educator, and community leader Khuent Rose will lead the class during the months of March and April, 2020 at Achievement First High School (1485 Pacific Street) on Saturday mornings at 9am - 11am. The course will be divided into two units: (1) Building and Tuning a Dudup (2 note drum) and (2) Building and Tuning a Four Note drum. During these classes, students will learn the following techniques: sinking, marking, grooving, setting/backing, cutting, burning, tuning, applying protective finish, and fine tuning and blending. Participants will be required to purchase a heavy hammer for synching, and a mid-weight hammer for tuning. All other materials will be provided by J’Ouvert CIty International and Brooklyn Arts Council. Please note, class size is limited.
To enroll in this class, please contact Christopher Mulé (cmule@brooklynartscouncil.org; 718-812-5002) or Khuent Rose (khuentertainment@gmail.com).
