SU-CASA 2023 Application Opens November 10th!
SU-CASA is a community arts engagement program that places artists in residence at senior centers across Brooklyn. SU-CASA artists engage older adults in an art project or series of cultural programs over the course of the residency. Each residency also includes a public program component – exhibits, readings, performances, open houses or other cultural events open to the surrounding community.
Individual artists-in-residence receive a stipend of $6,000, an additional $2,000 materials/supplies budget, and access to materials and supplies from Materials for the Arts. Individual artists can apply directly to participate in the program without a fiscal sponsor. Artists may apply for up to two SU-CASA residencies.

Applicants will be notified of their application status and, if selected, which senior center they will work with, by the end of December 2022.
Residencies will take place between January 1 - June 30, 2023.
The 2023 SU-CASA program is funded by the New York City Council. It is a collaboration among the City Council, the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), the Department for the Aging (DFTA) and Brooklyn Arts Council.
Cultural Space Opportunity: The Axel

In partnership with Hopestreet, Brooklyn Arts Council is issuing a call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for a rare opportunity to lease a lower level cultural space within The Axel, a brand new development that includes a chance to have the space outfitted to suit the tenant’s specifications (within budget restrictions). The space is approximately 2,100 sq. ft. and is situated on the border of Downtown Brooklyn at the convergence of Clinton Hill, Fort Greene, and Prospect Heights.
While there are still many elements that are yet to be determined, now is a great time to explore this possibility so the developer can work with the tenant while construction is underway. Christina Massey is exhibiting her mixed media glass and repurposed aluminum sculptures in a new colorful installation that activates the UrbanGlass Window Gallery. The work addresses the potential effects of climate change on vegetation over time due to industries like fracking. The works have an oddness and mysteriousness to them, almost acting like crystal balls, where we look within for answers which are obstructed by reflections and patterns which distract us with their aesthetic beauty.

Written by Elizabeth Wong, based on material generated by Hook & Eye Theater. Two space nuns race against time to make sense of this century in a new pick-a-path sci-fi andromedy. The play examines, with a wink, the precariousness of our legacies and the vastness of our shared digital reliance while the audience votes on important moments, altering the course of the show in real time as two families - one Iranian immigrants and the other blue blooded New Englanders - meet their inevitable collision.

The Bushwick Starr and The Chocolate Factory Theater in partnership with HERE present The Institute of Useless Activity’s THIS and THAT. What is THIS? What is THAT? — THAT imagines the creation of the universe. Video equipment comes to life by the cranking of tripod knobs, zooming in and out, maneuvering visual feedback loops, dissolving images together and apart, creating an abstract video puppetry before our eyes. THIS is about people – their romantic sense of longing, loss, alienation and near miss. Hand shadow vignettes, inspired by Henry Moore sculptures, morph from one scene to another.

Black Atlantic is an exhibition inspired by the diaspora across the ocean that connects Africa with the Americas and Europe. Each commission suggests a unique creative approach towards crafting new identities and futures through the personal gestures of hand-made work, often in dialogue with the processes of large-scale fabrication. Black Atlantic was commissioned by Public Art Fund and co-curated by artist Hugh Hayden and Public Art Fund Adjunct Curator Daniel S. Palmer. Artists include Leilah Babirye, Hugh Hayden, Dozie Kanu, Tau Lewis, and Kiyan Williams.

Demystifying NFTs is a two-part workshop series and award program where artists, performers, writers, and cultural workers can learn how to create eco-responsible NFTs. While NFTs have disrupted the art world, many of us cannot explain how this technology functions. For this reason, NYFA partnered with artist/technologist Laura Ó Reilly, who developed this program as part of her new Technology Gap initiative in an effort to ground crypto back to earth. Demystifying NFTs presents an accessible, environmentally conscious alternative to creating and stewarding NFTs.

Beam Center Open Call

Each year, Beam Center seeks design proposals for ambitious public artworks that will be brought to life through collaborations between youth and creative big thinkers. Projects are realized by a community of more than 100 young people at each of our project sites: in New Hampshire (NH), on Governors Island (GI), and in a local NYC community.
VelvetPark LGBTQ+ Writers Residency

Velvetpark Residency is a project based work-studio, awarded through a selection process by open application. It is open to LGBTQ+ writers and visual artists to complete a proposed project. For almost two decades Velvetpark has recognized queer people in the arts, academia and activism, by featuring stories on, by, or about these individuals in the pages of the print magazine and online.
Lenore G. Tawney Fellowship
Stipend: $30,000

This opportunity seeks to foster new engagement with pioneer fiber artist Lenore G. Tawney’s art environment that is installed at JMKAC’s Art Preserve and part of the institution’s collection. The fellowship is open to scholars, writers, curators, and artists at all educational levels with demonstrated engagement in research, study, or other activities relevant to the study of the collection.
Bronx Council on the Arts Community Engagement Grants

The Bronx Council on the Arts is accepting applications for three grants: New Work supports individual Bronx-based artists through a commissioning grant of $2,500 for new work in a community setting; Arts Fund supports Bronx-based individual artists, artist collectives and 501(c)(3) arts organizations with an organizational budget below $100,000; and Community Arts supports local arts projects and activities that enable Bronx communities to engage with the performing, literary, media, and visual arts.
Cafe Royal Cultural Foundation Visual Art Grant

Café Royal Cultural Foundation NYC will award an exhibition/project grant to artists creating paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs. Café Royal is only accepting 40 application for each category for the remaining grant cycles in 2022.

Data Through Design (DxD) is now accepting submissions for our 2023 exhibition, Hidden in Plain Sight. We invite artists, data professionals, designers, scientists, historians, activists, coders, community organizers, policymakers, and others to submit their proposals for projects to be presented in the DxD exhibition in March of 2023.
amant Studio & Research Residency Program

The Studio & Research Residency Program in NY awards artists from around the world with research-oriented residencies in its campus in Brooklyn. Following Amant’s aim of slowing-down the art-making process, we provide artists with space, resources, and guidance to support long-term research projects and archival work. Through our Open Call for the 2023-2024 Exhibition Program, we select works that present compelling ideas, unconventional methods, and risky themes that expand the parameters of contemporary art. The resulting exhibition theme is selected and curated by our 2023 Curator-in-Residence.
Artist-in-residence
KUNSTRAUM offers artist residencies, thought-provoking exhibitions, public programs, networking opportunities, affordable studio space, curatorial fellowships, and discourse for creative production. Through the rotating artist residency program, we offer three-month residencies for national and international artists on a quarterly cycle to join our community.
CURATOR-in-residence
For the Curator-in-Residence 2023-24 (“CIR”), we are seeking a self-starter with an innovative and ambitious mind who thrives on creative freedom, is comfortable assuming a leadership role, and has an interest in working within an established artist-run gallery. CIR's mission is to bring a unique curatorial vision to the program and highlight their curatorial practice in the New York art world by facilitating engaging exhibitions and events and building our community.
DeVos Institute GLOBAL ARTS MANAGEMENT FELLOWSHIP

The DeVos Institute’s Global Arts Management Fellowship provides full scholarship training and support for arts executives from across the United States and around the world over a three-year, cohort-based engagement. Fellows attend a four-week residency in Washington, D.C. for three consecutive years. The Fellowship includes intensive, practical training in artistic & strategic planning, marketing, fundraising, board development, and finance; access to leaders of cultural institutions around the world; and collaborative group work.
SMACKMELLON Artist Studio Program

The Artist Studio Program was launched in 2000 in response to the crisis of available affordable space for artists living and working in New York City. The program provides six eligible artists working in all visual arts media a free private studio space accessible 24/7 and a fellowship (dependent on funding).

The Intergenerational Community Arts Council (ICAC) seeks an environmental designer, set designer, or installation artist to help create the visual, physical, and interactive elements for SPREAD LOVE, a pop-up performance event that will travel to four local community centers in May-June 2023. SPREAD LOVE is being created by an intergenerational crew of artists, performers, and producers. The performance is grounded in the unique cultural history of Downtown Brooklyn, and builds on the ICAC members’ commitment to support community health and wellness through artistic opportunities.
Jazz Road Tours

Our sister Regional Arts Organization, South Arts, has re-opened Jazz Road Tours, part of the national, artist-centric Jazz Road program. Jazz artists can apply for grants of up to $15,000 supporting three- to six-site tours around the country. This artist-centric grant program—designed to support approximately 50 tours each year—is made possible with funds from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation with additional support from the Mellon Foundation.
The David Prize

The David Prize is a celebration of individuals and ideas to create a better, brighter New York City. Open to any individual working in the five boroughs, the Prize welcomes those with the grit and vision to change our communities, our culture and our future for good. Whether socially, economically, culturally, environmentally (or otherwise), awardees have a divergent and unique vision for how to make NYC a place where people yearn to live, and concrete ideas about how to achieve it.
nars Studio Relief Residency

NARS’ mission is geared towards creating community while fostering expansion and exchange of artistic and cultural practices. In March 2020, in response to COVID, we dedicated part of the NARS Studios to NY based artists who were in need of a space but were otherwise unable to afford it. Each subsidized studio space is available for 3 months, as a work-space only. Throughout this time, artists have 24/7 access to their spaces and are be able to liaise with a diverse artistic community.

New Yorkers for Culture and Arts (NY4CA) is undergoing a strategic plan to understand how best to serve its members, constituents, and the arts and culture sector in New York City. NY4CA is a cultural advocacy coalition, formed in 2018 to advocate for improved public policy and increased support for culture in NYC. They need your input on what is needed in our field, and how they can best advocate for a vibrant future for culture in NYC! This brief survey should take approximately 8-10 minutes to complete.

NYFA Immigrant Artist Resource Center

Founded to serve as a hub where immigrant artists can access resources, exchange ideas, collaborate, and amplify their voices in the American cultural landscape. Programming centers on helping immigrant artists with the development and presentation of their works and fostering communities and a sense of belonging while providing support for their overall well-being.
HueArts NYS Survey
HueArts NYS is a research project to create a comprehensive online Map and Directory for and about New York-based arts entities led by, founded by, and centering Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, and all People of Color. Museum Hue has already developed a Map and Directory, and a Brown Paper for New York City, and is now looking to hear from arts entities founded and led by People of Color outside of NYC to understand the unique cultural arts landscape in New York State. We welcome any POC-founded and led art entity, to complete this survey.
