BAC Arts in Education: Upcoming Programs
The ethics of participation Workshop (*Rescheduled*)
The Ethics of Participation is a professional development workshop co-hosted by BAC and Lincoln Center Theater Education.

Co-facilitated by Chris Heller & Kati Koerner of Lincoln Center Theater's Education Department
The power of the facilitator and the agency of the participant is dynamic and ever-changing. As facilitators, we want to create immersive artistic experiences for students that are relevant to their lives and that frame their learning. This session will consider the ethics of facilitation through hands-on drama and dance activities appropriate for all participants, as well as discussing problems of practice, so that our teaching doesn’t unintentionally end up reproducing the oppressive structures we’re trying to critique.
AIE Summer Open Call

BAC is piloting a new summer program for elementary and middle school-aged students in Brooklyn this year! The program will offer a one-week deep dive into an art form for students to hone their artistic skills while developing additional transferable skills like collaboration, critical thinking, environmental awareness, and technology skills. We are looking for both prospective students and Teaching Artists to join us this summer.
Eco-Textile Art

Taking place both indoors and outdoors, students will explore and create amidst nature's wonders. Through textile art, nature journaling, and eco-art, students can expect to hone their artistic skills through weaving, sketching, collaging, and more while also fostering a deep connection with our environment, both locally and globally.

Students entering 5th-8th grade in Fall 2024

Students will engage with various aspects of technology such as digital media, coding, and game design as a way to explore the natural world around them. By blending outdoor excursions with tech-based workshops, students will discover how technology can be a tool for understanding, preserving, and appreciating our local environment.

The Hanging Gardens of Brooklyn

“The Hanging Gardens of Brooklyn” is a traveling art installation that serves as a creative commons for artistic expression, public well-being, and collective stewardship. The work features a trellised canopy of edible and native plants, as well as a solar-powered lighting and audio system to support public programming hosted within and around the artwork. Following its previous exhibition in Highland Park, “The Hanging Gardens of Brooklyn” in Herbert Von King Park marks the second public art installation by Bryce Peterson of Brycebot Studio.

The beloved free outdoor reggae Summer Soundsystem Series that includes Coney Island Reggae On The Boardwalk and Reggae Under The Bridge returns in 2024 on June 9, July 7, August 4, and August 31st in Brooklyn and Queens, featuring an array of reggae vinyl specialist DJs from Brooklyn, New York City, and beyond. WKCR DJ Carter Van Pelt founded the event series in June 1010, originally conceiving it as a way to play more traditional reggae at an accessible location (Coney Island Boardwalk) to a broad audience.

Commemorating 10 years since the murder of Eric Garner in Staten Island, ISSUE participates in a series of community activations happening across NYC sparked by The Ritual of Breath Is the Rite to Resist to contend with an important question: what does it mean to support Black life through embodied ritual? To honor this memorial anniversary, ISSUE welcomes liberation-oriented free-jazz collective Irreversible Entanglements and afrofuturistic vocalist and improviser, Shara Lunon to First Unitarian.
SU-CASA: Creative Aging Culminating Events
“Here We Are/We Are Here”

“Here We Are/We Are Here” is the culminating event of James Clements’ Brooklyn Arts Council SU-CASA residency with the seniors at the Independence Neighbourhood Center in Williamsburg. Clements, an immigrant artist and documentary theatre maker, has worked with the primarily immigrant seniors participants at the centre over the past several weeks on a verbatim audio play, accompanied by a photography series by Puerto Rican photographer Pablo Calderón-Santiago. The play, built from interviews conducted by Clements with the seniors about their lives, their memories and their hopes for their future as well as the future of Brooklyn, will be debuted at the event, alongside an exhibition of photographs of the participants, followed by a reception. This multilingual documentary theatre project is a testament to the vitality, dignity and diversity of the seniors in our borough, honouring their words, perspectives and experiences. It is Clements' third consecutive project with the SU-CASA program.
“Healing Drum Circle”

The Healing Drum Circle begins with a drum call to gather participating Midwood Neighborhood Center members, involving both drumming and singing a vocal call and response. It is a communal experience, which encourages the participants to work together to make a difference in the community.

West African Mande Music Celebration

Celebrate West African Mande music with the seniors of the Vandalia OAC, Irene Koloseus, Andy Algire, Niko Diarra-Koloseus, and special guest griot Abou Sylla. Seniors will dazzle the community with a lively performance, showcasing their newfound skills alongside the group Feraba.
Year of the Dragon - Chinese Calligraphy and Paper Cutting

MingLiang Lu is a BAC Teaching Artist.
This event will have an exhibition of all the participating seniors’ art works from SU-CASA 2024 program lead by artist MingLiang Lu of Calligraphy and Papercutting workshop. The senior center will send event notification in later May to the local community and social media for the culminating event opening date and time. The event is FREE and open to public for view on June 19, 2024. The program participants will have their art works finished and framed one week before the final presentation to be displayed on the wall of the event place. There will be participants to tell their learning experiences on the final presentation date and encourage other seniors to learn in the future. Senior Center and artists will provide refreshments and soft drink for the event opening. Have senior center director and local leaders give speech about SU-CASA programs and give time for group-photos.

Let us mend together.
Performance artist, mike durkin, will unveil The Mending Quilt. This is a culmination of the time mike spent at the Pete McGuiness OAC in Greenpoint. mike conducted story-sharing circles focusing on mending bodies and communities. He used this as inspiration to work with the older adults to create a collaborative quilt together. The sharing session will consist of the unveiling of the quilt, stories from participants, a sample mending session, and refreshments.

Marvin’s First Day: A Juneteenth Celebration for Kids!

Hosted by City Point and Da Spot NYC, this celebration in Downtown Brooklyn is perfect for kids aged 3-10. Enjoy a special read-aloud by Malcolm Dill and a captivating spoken word performance by Kayden Hern, known for his poem “In My Mind” recited at Governor Hochul’s inauguration! Juneteenth-inspired activities will include DIY crafts: a Make-Your-Own-Flag station, a bracelet beading bar, Marvin’s First Day coloring sheets, and a cookie decorating station. CURATORIAL PROGRAM FOR RESEARCH (CPR) — Core Program
CPR is a 2023 BAC Grantee.

CPR’s Research Program for Curators is at the core of our organization’s work. Fully funded, our annual nomadic residency provides an intensive immersion in a regional art scene. Organized by local hosts, CPR Core Programs feature visits to several cities in a region for a total of 3-4 weeks, providing an insight into their unique art, history and culture.
KUNSTRAUM 2024-2025 Artist-in-Residence

KUNSTRAUM is a community of artists by artists with the goal of redefining the collaboration between artists and curators. Through this program, KUNSTRAUM aims to explore the relationships between artists and curators by opening our gallery spaces to those interested in exploring unconventional, engaging ideas and taking risks. KUNSTRAUM’s Artist-in-Residency program offers three-month residencies for national and international artists on a quarterly cycle.
Tanfis III Residency
Remix ⟷ Culture is a 2023 BAC Grantee.

Are you a New York-based artist who works as a traditional musician, remix artist, video installation artist, or storyteller? Do you identify as Black and/or Indigenous to the "Americas"? If so, this application is for you! Tanfis III is an interdisciplinary residency program seeking to elevate the community-rooted music and stories of NY-based artists who identify as Black and/or Indigenous to the “Americas.” The 9 artists selected for this program (traditional musicians, remix artists, video artists, and storytellers) will participate in a residency facilitated by Remix ⟷ Culture in the Hudson Valley, NY, over the course of the first 3 weeks of September 2024.
Dance/NYC: Dance Advancement Fund
EOI Deadline: June 18 at 5pm ET | Two-year GOS from $6,000 - $40,000
Made possible by the generous support of the Howard Gilman Foundation and the Ford Foundation, Dance/NYC invites dance making organizations and groups based in the metropolitan NYC area with operating budgets of $25,000-$250,000 to submit applications for support through the fourth iteration of the Dance Advancement Fund. Selected dance making organizations and groups will receive two-year general operating support grants of $6,000 to $40,000 annually, including ongoing professional development.
The Ryan Hudak LGBTQ+ Dramatic Writing Award

The Ryan Hudak LGBTQ+ Dramatic Writing Award is an annual $8,000 cash grant awarded to one (1) New York State-based playwright or screenwriter who self-identifies as LGBTQ+. The Award honors the life and work of Ryan Hudak. Ryan was a gay playwright, theater maker, filmmaker, and a valued member of NYFA’s staff who served on the executive and development teams. Tragically, Ryan passed away in May 2022 after a long battle with Leukemia at the age of 32.
2024 LIVABLE NEIGHBORHOODS PROGRAM (LNP)

As part of LNP 2024, MAS seeks applications from community members interested in learning about new tools and resources that provide important information about land use planning and development in their neighborhoods. This program may be particularly useful for individuals or group representatives interested in participating in the public review processes, such as developing a community plan or learning about a City-led rezoning.
DCLA Cultural Development Fund
Deadline: June 27 at 5pm ET
The Program Services Unit of the Department of Cultural Affairs is charged with the administration of the Cultural Development Fund, an annual grant-making process for New York City's nonprofit arts and cultural organizations. Through the CDF process, the agency awards support for a vast array of programs provided by many of the City's largest cultural organizations as well as neighborhood-based groups that represent New York's extraordinary cultural breadth.
DCLA Cultural Development Fund Panelist Open Call
Stipend: $480
The NYC Department of Cultural Affairs’ Cultural Development Fund (CDF) is the city’s competitive, peer-evaluated grant process that supports a broad, multidisciplinary group of diverse non-profit organizations for their cultural services to city residents. DCLA is seeking panelists with a broad range of expertise within the cultural workforce including artists, teaching artists, board members, executive leaders, education staff, and marketing and community engagement professionals. Panel service includes independent review and scoring for approximately 20 applications, followed by participation in a secondary review with other panelists in a single-day virtual panel held from summer to fall of 2024.

Nou Akoma Nou Sinèrji Haitian Dominican Transnational Film Festival and Symposium aims to showcase art and films from emerging and accomplished industry professionals of the Haitian Dominican African Diaspora to authentically reflect our community’s diverse experiences and backgrounds. Its four-day programming Oct 2024, promotes cultural diversity through various art genres, including dramatic, documentary, experimental, short films, podcasts, and panel discussions.
Queer | Art: The Illuminations Grant for Black Trans Women Visual Artists
Deadline: June 30 | $10,000 & $1,250
The Illuminations Grant for Black Trans Women Visual Artists is an annual $10,000 grant awarded to provide critical support to Black trans women whose work has often been under-recognized in the visual art field. The grant sheds light on the under-recognized contributions of Black trans women visual artists and provides critical support to their continuing work.
NYC DOT ART: Community Commissions rfp
Deadline: June 30
NYC DOT Art’s Community Commissions: Artists Request for Proposals (RFP) is a signature initiative in which the agency collaborates with community-based organizations to commission artists to design and install temporary public art on NYC DOT infrastructure citywide. Artists are invited to submit proposals in response to the priority site and partner list by Sunday, June 30, 2024. Site-specific artworks may remain installed for up to 11 months and selected artists are eligible to receive up to $20,000 towards direct project costs for sculptural work or two-dimensional work.
Queer | Art: Robert Giard Grant for Emerging LGBTQ+ Photographers

The Robert Giard Grant for Emerging LGBTQ+ Photographers supports the creation of work by emerging LGBTQ+ photographers whose projects address issues of sexuality, gender, or LGBTQ+ identity. This grant provides an award of $10,000 for the winner and $1,250 for distinguished finalists.
ArtsBergen Public Art Roster Call for Artists

Northern NJ Community Foundation ArtsBergen is one of the largest producers of public art in Bergen County, NJ, and is seeking to grow its roster of artists who create public art that is relevant to community and accessible to the public. This is an opportunity for artists to be included in a pool for potential paid work opportunities. ArtsBergen is looking to learn more about artists in the area available and interested in creating public art. We will compile this list of talent into a roster of artists we can call upon to help us develop and implement projects. The roster will also become the main tool for choosing artists for public art projects, as well as a resource to match municipal interest and artist disciplines, styles, and foci.
Two Trees’ Cultural Space Subsidy Program

Recognizing that market rents are not feasible for all, the Cultural Space Subsidy Program awards affordable studio space to artists that best demonstrate their capabilities and intent to provide a social benefit to DUMBO and the broader Brooklyn community. Two Trees is dedicated to maintaining a diverse group of commercial tenants that exemplify DUMBO’s identity as a place where creativity, entrepreneurship, and community engagement are celebrated.

Series and Repetition are distinct yet related terms. What they share is a focus on the elaboration of repeated elements, which has given rise to some of the most momentous shifts in art history: the classical arabesque and its calligraphic development in the arts of the Islamic world; serial photography and the development of the moving image; minimalist and pop art constructions based on the techniques of mass production. Support for Artists: Funds creative commissions to individual artists across the state. Applicants must apply through a non-profit fiscal sponsor. Grant awards are $10,000; fiscal sponsors may retain a maximum of $500 for administrative costs.
Support for Targeted Opportunities: The opportunities provide funding for creative performance residencies, subsidized rehearsal spaces for all performing art forms, and folk arts apprenticeships.
Support for Regrants and Services: Supports regrant and partner organizations across all 62 counties while identifying new opportunities to ensure the greater reach of NYSCA funding and greater access for new applicants.
Serve as a NYSCA Panelist
Deadline: July 22
Each year, more than 150 artists, nonprofit leaders, and arts and culture administrators from all over New York State serve as NYSCA panelists, making our grantmaking possible. With their individual experiences and perspectives, they are responsible for reviewing each grant application and are essential to the evaluation process. Are you ready to serve? If selected, you can serve for up to three years, meeting virtually in late summer/early fall to review applications. Your service is essential for a fair and unbiased evaluation process to support the arts.
Adobe Creative Residency Community Fund
Deadline: Rolling | $10,000
The Adobe Creative Residency Community Fund provides support to creators during times of extraordinary hardship. The Community Fund aims to respond to global events that directly impact the wellbeing of creators, focusing its support on an ongoing issue in order to drive positive impact over a period of time. The Fund may shift its focus to a new issue after this sustained period of support. Current Fund efforts are focused on supporting creators who have been directly impacted by the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
“The Right to Have Rights” Open Call for Artwork & Proposals
Deadline: August 5
Dominicans Love Haitians Movement is presenting its second annual Nou Akoma Nou Sinèrji Haitian Dominican Transnational Symposium with the theme, “The Right to Have Rights.” The symposium invites artists, performers, panels, and podcasts to submit artwork and proposals related to the underpinnings of rights and their divestment: belonging, disallowance, invisibility, dignity, exclusion, uprootedness, vulnerability. Dominicans Love Haitians Movement invites artists, performers, panels, and podcasts to submit proposals related to event topics.

Call on City Leadership to Invest in Arts and Culture!
In less than a month, New York City’s FY25 budget will go into effect. The Mayor’s executive budget only includes a partial restoration for budget cuts instituted for FY24 and FY25 and planned for future years through FY27. Thankfully, the City Council has called for the restoration of $75.6 million in its budget response to account for the cuts. Alongside organizations like Dance/NYC, we urge arts and culture workers to join us in this advocacy before the June 30th budget deadline.

Brooklyn Conservatory of Music (BKCM) Free Rehearsal Space
Thanks to support from the New York City Mayor’s Office of Media Entertainment, musicians have the opportunity to rehearse for free at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music during New York Music Month, which runs throughout the month of June! Each individual artist may book up to 3 hours of free rehearsal time. Spaces will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, booking two weeks out.
